Ember whimpered as she was strapped down to the table, the attendants not being gentle in the least bit. As soon as they were done, the doctor brought over the leather and metal that made up the "hat" for the EST machine. He place it on her head and attached it to her cranium.
She watched him frantically, a slight tremble running through her body. Why did they have to do this? Didn't they know how much it hurt her? It made her feel worse than she already did. Made her feel like more of a freak than she was.
Her mind drifted towards the thought of Dareynn. What was he doing right now? Was he waiting for her at the shed? Probably not. She didn't show up last night since the attendants had taken her early in order for her to be prepared for her treatment. Was he worried about her at all? Did he even care? Dare wasn't an overly emotional guy after all.
A small frown crossed her face as she remembered two days before when she had stolen his lighter just to play with the fire. She wanted to surprise him with her control over the flame. After all, he had been helping her out with that for the past six months. She wanted to prove that she had had some improvements. Of course, then he got rather cross with her... Yelled at her, too. She had almost lost control; she had been so upset. Ember had run off just before he could tell her to leave him, which she was positive he was going to do.
She hadn't seen him since.
Ember sighed. He probably didn't even care. She wasn't as important to him as his customers and cigarettes. She never would be, no matter how much she wanted to be close to him. She didn't know why she was so hurt by the fact that his lighter meant more to him than she did. Did he hate her? Was the only reason he had helped her was because he pitied her? That was probably it.
A small tear streaked down her cheek as the doctor told her that they were turning the machine on.
10% power.
She barely felt anything other than a light tingle.
20% power.
Okay, now it was a light buzz.
And so it went on, the power getting higher and higher. It was around 46% that it started to hurt, causing her to whimper and whine. As it continued to grow, her whines became cries of pain, which soon became screams.
Why wouldn't it stop?! Make it stop! Someone, help!
Her mind was going out of control, but the doctors didn't even seem to notice as they continued to raise the power and take notes.
65% power...

The sun was just beginning to dip below the horizon, the sun slowly changing the too-blue to a sort of creamy yellow-gold infused with red. Dareynn wandered aimlessly around the wooded area of the grounds, searching for Ember as the cigarette in his hand was slowly diminished to nothing.
Grinding it out, he finally decided she wasn't here. He hadn't seen her in a while. Was she angry at him? He hoped not. They had been working together, trying to get her unusual...power...under control. Dareynn honestly had no idea how to go about that. He wasn't even sure it was real. After all, he'd been seeing some pretty weird things lately. Maybe being here was making all the patients go insane. After all, Ivan...well, he was pretty far out there. Ivan had been there the longest out of all the patients, and he was undoubtedly the least sane. This place just seemed to affect people that way.
Heading back toward the main building, he let his hands slide into his pockets. He could always just wander around the facility until he found her. Granted, that would take a fair amount of maneuvering, since the Coats always prowled around the hallways at night. They didn't want anyone to get out. (Which clearly didn't work very well, since Dareynn was outside.)
He slipped back into the building, using an old, broken-out basement window. The basement was the creepiest part of the whole building, and that was really saying something. But it was the only way Dareynn could get in and out at night. He felt goosebumps raise on his arms as he crept as silently as possible down the hall, fingers unconsciously playing with his lighter as he tried to calm his nerves.
The quiet hum of electricity distracted him momentarily. He'd never heard that down here before. The buzz got louder, making Dareynn's face contort into a scowl. He hated the way it made his ears feel. It hurt. His natural instinct was to avoid the sound. Thankfully, he seemed to be walking away from it.
A second later, a scream echoed down the hallway. He stopped dead in his tracks. With a bone-chilling rush, all the blood left his face and a shiver ran over his body. His breath caught in his throat and his heart stopped. It was as if someone had found the buttons that made him run and pushed "Pause." Then everything started working again in double time. That scream....was familiar. It was Ember.
Against his better judgement, Dareynn turned and forced himself to go toward the source of the electricity and the scream.

Flames began to crawl up the walls as the electricity intensified. She was losing control, and still the doctors did nothing to stop the pain. This was this way of controlling her, trying to break her of her madness. She was a freak; then again, all were freaks here.
One of the nurses glanced nervously at the walls. The flames didn't seem to burn them. Strange... Last time there had been scorch marks, but now as the fire licked the concrete, there was nothing. How very odd.
Dr. Roger Stevens noticed the nurse looking away and scowled. "Do not pay attention to the flames. We have proofed this room and fixed it so it would not burn. At least the walls, mind you. Turn the power up up another five percent."
The nurse nodded and began to carefully turn the dial, taking them to 70% power. It was the highest they had ever taken the girl. She frowned when a few minutes later, she was ordered to turn it up another ten percent. She wanted to argue, knowing they should take it slow, but knew he wasn't going to allow that. Sadly, she turned it up once more.
That was the very moment hell broke loose as the flames exploded, lighting various objects on fire--this time actually incinerating them--yet, as they touched the humans... they did not burn them. More like a gentle tickle.
Even through all of this, Ember had a little control over the fire. She didn't want the other "humans" dead. She didn't want to lose the last six months of work she had done controlling the burning substance. However, her mind was wavering as she was shocked again and again. How much longer she would last... she didn't know... She could feel herself falling into darkness...

The feeling of unease only grew as Dareynn neared the door. He didn't want to see what was inside. Surely it was something terrible, something so bad he couldn't even imagine the horror of it all.
The electricity felt like it was running over his body, making the hairs on his arms and on the back of his neck stand on end. He clenched and unclenched his hands, trying to calm himself down. He didn't want to get caught somewhere he shouldn't be. It would not end well, there was no doubt about that. And if they were doing something down here that wasn't supposed to be happening.
He looked through the small cut-out window in the door, trying to prepare himself for the worst. It wouldn't surprise him at all if the Coats were experimenting on children, or animals--though the scream definitely hadn't been an animal.
Dareynn definitely hadn't been prepared for what he saw. It was Ember, strapped to a table. Flames were everywhere. There were two Coats, ones Dareynn hadn't seen too much of. If he remembered correctly, they were the ones who prescribed his pills. He'd only seen them once or twice.
The electric...thing...seemed to be hooked up to Ember, and it was obvious it was shocking her. What was Dareynn supposed to do? He couldn't just go in there and stop them. That would be just about the dumbest thing he could do. It would only get him--and, more than likely, Ember--in trouble.
It was awful to watch, but he couldn't pull his eyes away. It was like all he could do was see what was happening. He didn't hear what the doctor said, but he saw his mouth move. The nurse turned a dial and the electricity intensified. The buzz got louder, making Dareynn want to cover his ears even though he felt like it wouldn't do any good.

Her screams wouldn't cease as they continued to up the power to her brain, but finally, she could no longer take it as she completely lost control. The doctor and nurse never knew what hit them as they were incinerated, along with the machine and all the papers but the single file on her kept in the fireproof safe. The force of the powerful shockwave that left her body sent a multitude of cracks scowering the walls. The glass in the door shattered, sending particles outward into the corridor.
And then, it stopped. Complete and utter silence. Everything in the room was dead, blackened, and beyond recognition...
Well, almost everything. Ember lay on the table simmering, her skin blackened and burned, but she was somehow alive, her chest slowly rising and falling.

The sounds of Ember's screams grated against Dareynn's ears, making him wince. It felt like the door was barely muffling the sound. He couldn't tell if it was his imagination making him feel the heat of the flames or if it was real. He stepped back, startled, as flames jumped up by the window panel, two inches from his eyes. The bright orange light left spots in his vision, making him step back further, forcing him to tear his eyes away.
Rubbing his eyes, he blinked to clear the spots. What could he do? It'd be a bad idea to go into the room. Not only would he get burned, but he'd probably get in trouble for being there in the first place, and then they could take it out on Ember, or just torture him until they were satisfied.
Suddenly the glass shattered and the fiercest heat wave Dareynn had ever felt erupted from the door's window panel, the glass cutting into his face and hands. His eyes were watering and the cuts on his face were stinging from the intense heat. It faded slowly, the ache staying with him for what felt like a long time. When he was able to look back at the door, he could see that the metal around the hole where the window had been was melted and disfigured, the metal literally dripping.
What had happened? Taking a step closer to the door, Dareynn held his hand a few inches away. He couldn't feel heat coming off the surface of the door, so he slowly laid his hand onto the handle. Still cool. A hard yank brought the door swinging open, a metallic, gurgling sound accompanying the scrape of the door as it opened. Looking down, Dareynn saw that the door had melted on the inside, too, and had been smeared across the floor when he opened it.
There was nothing inside. Well. Almost nothing. A safe Dareynn assumed was fireproof sat near one wall, the table with Ember on it still in place. She was laying there, barely breathing. Everything else was ashes, even the doctors. Not knowing what else to do, Dareynn went over to his friend. "Ember," he said cautiously, afraid to touch her. He could feel a few drops of blood trickling down his face and hands. What if she woke up and he scared her? "Ember, it's Dareynn," he said a little louder. He didn't know what else to do.

Dareynn rubbed his hand across his face, wincing as a piece of glass came loose and scraped across his skin. Ember's eyes opened just as he was wiping his face again, being more careful about it this time. "It's okay, Ember, you're safe," Dareynn said, stepping closer still. "Just take a deep breath," he continued, not sure if Ember was unconscious or not. He didn't want to touch her, for fear of getting attacked or injuring her. Either of them being hurt more than they were was a bad thing, no doubt about it.
Looking around, Dareynn noticed the safe. He crossed to it, kneeling down. He kept talking to Ember as he did, asking her if she could hear him and if she was okay. Telling her to just make a noise, if she couldn't manage words. Anything to let him know she was still alive, that she was still there.
As he spoke his fingers ran over the surface of the safe, the metal warm after the fire. It wasn't scalding hot, which was one thing he was grateful for. What would the Coats have had a safe in here for? Clearly, it was for something important. Not really expecting it to work, Dareynn yanked on the safe's handle. He wasn't surprised when the door didn't budge. He'd have to figure out the combination. He turned the dial back and forth between his fingers, rotating it around a few times, listening to the safe. It was weird. He'd broken into safes before, but never one this complicated.
"Ember, do you know what's in here?" He almost didn't expect an answer to that question, either, but he'd asked it anyway.

Her body was asleep, but her mind was not. Flames appeared in the air, spelling out files on me in front of Dareynn's face before disappearing. Moments later, they reappeared, this time spelling free me... free me...
The flames gave off no heat, yet were not cold. It was almost as if there was no temperature for them. They had been white in color, edged in green.
Ember, on the other hand, wasn't bound down any longer, the straps having been burned away in her "outburst"... so what was she referring to with "free me"?
And what were these files? Why were they in the safe?

Dareynn started, falling back when words appeared in front of him in flames. Files? His brow furrowed. Patient files were supposed to be kept locked in the office, in filing cabinets. (Granted, Dareynn had been able to bribe a warden or two to show him some files, but that was a different story.) Why would the file on Ember be down here?
The second part--"Free me"--made Dareynn turn around. His hand was still on the dial to the safe, the boy determined to crack it open. "You aren't tied down any more, Ember," he told her, not sure what else to do. Maybe it felt like the bonds were still on her and she couldn't tell they were gone. Turning back to the safe, Dareynn edged the dial slowly to the right, waiting until he heard just the right click to turn it back the other way, one number at a time. Eventually the second click came, and he started on the last number. He was almost in.

The words came again. Free me... free me...
Ember's eyes opened slowly, but she didn't utter a word as she watched him work his magic on the safe. She didn't call out. Didn't make a sound to alert him to her awakened state. For so long, she had wanted to tell him... and now he would learn from the very monsters themselves just what kind of freak she was.
She knew he'd turn his back on her. She just knew he would. Perhaps it was for the best. Perhaps it was meant to be. She had lost control... and people were dead because of it. She was so miserable...

Dareynn stared at the words, confusion furrowing his brow. The last number clicked into place and the safe door swung open. Dareynn was relieved. At least it hadn't taken him ten thousand tries.
He turned to Ember, not sure what to tell her to make her sure she was no longer tied up. He stood, ignoring the safe for now. He left the door hanging wide open, so it wouldn't close and lock again. Having to fight with the lock again would only piss him off. He went over to Ember, glad to see that her eyes were open. He picked up one of the bonds, holding it up. It dangled loosely from his fingers, charred and broken. "See, Ember? Nothing's keeping you locked up."
He tossed the bond to the floor, carefully moving his fringe from his face. He didn't want to change finding more shards of glass on his person. Yeah, they were small, but they fucking hurt.
"Do you know what the file is for?" Dareynn gestured back toward the safe, taking a few steps in that direction.

Me... what... they did to me. were the last things the flames seemed to say before dying out.
Ember trembled slightly. How was he going to react when he found out what was in there? That she had been a monster her entire life? That she was supposed to have been kept under lock and key?
She looked away from him and closed her eyes...
{yeah, I know it's short, and I'm sorry, but... there's not really a lot for her to do at the moment.... >.>;;}

Dareynn's brow furrowed as Ember seemed to withdraw, to hide inside herself. What could be so bad? "It's okay, Ember," he said softly. He turned and went to the safe, crouching down and drawing the envelope from the unmarked inside.
It was heavy, full of pages that were shoved haphazardly into the manila folder, corners sticking out everywhere. It was at least an inch and a half thick, which made Dareynn frown harder. Most of the files he'd seen had only contained ten sheets of paper at most. Ember's file was easily ten times that. He opened the folder, eyes scanning the first page. It was just the basic admittance form. Nothing seemed unusual.
From that page, things got gradually worse. As Dareynn read on, he felt his blood get cold, making him shiver. How could these doctors--these scientists--have done this to her? To a child! He swallowed hard, teeth digging into his bottom lip. He always knew he'd hated the Coats. Always, from the very moment he'd set foot on the grounds. He'd known it was an awful, hateful place. But now he knew the true horrors, the horrors that went beyond the wardens forcing patients into doing "things" for them, beyond the patients torturing one another, beyond the nurse all but ignoring everyone who came to her with an ache or wound or a sickness. It was torture, plain and simple. And Ember had been their plaything for years.
"We have to stop them, Ember." Dareynn's voice sounded foreign to his ears, like someone else was talking instead of him. They were just using his voice. "We'll make them pay for what they did to you. I... I can't believe they did this. They aren't even human, to do this to someone. You deserve better. You deserve revenge on them. They deserve every ounce of pain they felt just now, when... Well, I don't know what happened. But if you can learn to control it... Ember, we could get out of here. You and me, and everyone else... We'd be free." He closed the folder and went to stand next to Ember. "Let's do it," he said. "Let's get out of here."
